There is substantial research detailing annual escalation of employee healthcare costs. A 2012 report estimates that total health care premiums per employee in the US will edge over $10,000 for the first time, an increase of over 7% over 2011, far outpacing inflation and impacting companies’ bottom lines. This is compounded by two major factors: a sedentary occupational landscape, and the aging demographic of the average Canadian worker.

A review of over 120 programs to improve employee health found that in 2005 employers experienced a 26% reduction in healthcare costs and a return of $5.81 for each $1 invested. An alarming 2011 study released jointly with the CDC and US Department of Health and Human Services found that 24.1% of all Canadians are clinically obese! This was almost 10% higher than the previous study period. This is extremely costly. A study conducted across six continents showed that 90% of heart disease is preventable by healthy behaviors. Employers take the brunt of healthcare costs associated with inactive, unhealthy employees, including: * Increased employee insurance, disability and benefit costs, and worker’s compensation premiums. Additional indirect costs cited include: * A reduction in productivity and work satisfaction in addition to increased absenteeism and turnover.
IN SUMMARY ROI in employee health is better served by preventing healthy employees from slipping into unhealthy lifestyles than by trying to make chronically sick employees healthier.
